Many never leave the Heath for their entire lives. Residents of Egdon Heath live a simple life. Thus, there is no better time to read a review of this novel than today! Here is our full review for the classic The Return of the Native. (Please observe the hilarious cover, also, that seemed most fitting for this occasion, above). Moreover, the novel begins on Guy Fawkes Night (aka November 5)! Not including Aftercourses (the final part of the novel), the novel spans one year and one day, with the infamous Guy Fawkes Night containing the climax herein. However, this reader found the novel cohesive and whole despite the initially separate installments. Instead, the magazine Belgravia presented The Return of the Native in twelve monthly installments from January to December 1878 (You may recall from our post on book serializations that they used to be more popular in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries). In fact, it is over 100 years old! Also of note, it was not originally published as a complete book. Unlike many of the books we review, The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy is not a new publication.
